    Description

FROM A LONG ISLAND NEW YORK ESTATE
ANTIQUE CHINESE CEREMONIAL GONG FU TEA TABLE, ORNATELY CARVED FROM GOLDEN CAMPHOR ROOT
I CONTACTED AN APPRAISER WHO SPECIALIZES IN CHINESE FURNITURE AND HE BELIEVES THAT THIS PIECE IS PROBABLY FROM THE MID TO LATE 19TH CENTURY, AND I WAS TOLD THIS IS A RARE FIND IN THE USA.
YOU MAY NEVER COME UPON ANOTHER TABLE LIKE THIS AGAIN
!!!   i WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THE TABLE MOST LIKELY HAD 6 ROOT STOOLS TO SIT ON DURING THE TEA SERVICE.
THE CARVING IS OF A RECLINING BUDDHA HOLDING A CUP WITH BAMBOO/VINES AND WHAT LOOKS TO ME LIKE A CHERRY BRANCH WITH LOTUS PODS WHICH EDGE THE VARIOUS TIERS.  THERE IS ALSO A SMALL POCKET NEAR BUDDHA'S FOOT THAT HAS TWO CARVED INSECTS.
    Root ca
    rving
    is a traditional
    Chinese art
form. It consists of carving and polishing tree
    roots
    into various artistic creations.
Using roots to make necessities has been practiced since primitive society. Like other artistic crafts, art of roots produced from primitive labor. The earliest root carvings show up in the
    Warring States period
    .
    In the
    Sui
    and
    Tang
dynasties, root carving works not only prevailed in folk, but they were also cherished by the governing class. In the Tang dynasty, people laid emphasis on the natural forms of roots, cleverly taking advantage of the effect of corrosion and moth-eaten.
    In the
    Song
    and
    Yuan
dynasties, art of root carving not only developed in the court and folk, but also appeared in grottoes and temples. Roots were used to carve the statues of the
    Buddha
, always comparing favorably with the
    clay
    .
    The
    gongfu
    tea ceremony
    or
    kung fu tea ceremony
    (
    Chinese
    :
    工夫茶
    or
    功夫茶
    ), is a kind of
    Chinese tea ceremony
    ,
involving the ritualized preparation and presentation of
    tea
. It is probably based on the tea preparation approaches originated in
    Fujian
    and the
    Chaoshan
    area of eastern
    Guangdong
    .
The term literally means "making tea with skill".
THE TABLE MEASURES 5 FOOT LONG BY 31" AT THE WIDEST.  THE LOWEST TIER IS 16 INCHES FROM THE FLOOR AND THE HIGHEST TIER IS 28 INCHES FROM THE FLOOR.  MY BEST GUESS IS THAT IT WEIGHS ABOUT 130 to 160 lbs.
THE TABLE IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION FOR ITS AGE.  THERE ARE SOME SPLITS THAT HAVE OCCURRED AS THE WOOD DRIED, BUT THERE ARE NO "LOOSE" PARTS AND THE TABLE IS 100% STRUCTURALLY SOUND.
