Auctions is pleased to offer for sale a Large Chinese Recessed-Leg Altar Table.
The table is the type of piece that would've been used in 18th and 19th centuries as an altar or for displaying objects in the home.
It is large enough that it could've also been used for scroll painting.
It is a masterfully executed table, with a top made from one solid piece of baimu (Cypress wood) bordered by yumu (Elm wood), and the apron & legs also carved from yumu.
The table has a beautiful patina that has developed over many decades of use, and the texture of the elm grain is very appealing.  The table has a stunning apron with carved clouds that form ruyi heads and pierce-carved stretchers between the legs.  The table measures a large 100.25 inches long by 33.5 inches tall by 25.5 inches deep (255 cm by 85 cm by 65 cm).
